Critical Analysis of Death in Hamlet

Hamlet is by far one of William Shakespeare’s most notorious pieces of literature. According to John Irving, an American novelist, it is a life-redeeming work in which everyone dies. Many refer to the play as a tragedy, the tragedy of death. Therefore, death can be considered as the pervading theme in this play as nearly half of the characters come to an end. There are a total of eleven deaths throughout the play and each death seems to affect the remaining characters particularly Hamlet, the main character.

brother, has devoted the rest of his life to seek revenge for the death of his father and sister. He attempts to kill Hamlet but gets wounded with the poisoned blade and dies. Gertrude, the mother of Hamlet, the bereaved husband of King Hamlet and the present husband of King Claudius, drinks poison wine and passes away. Then, Hamlet gathers his final strength to kill King Claudius. Hamlet who is the main character in the story is the last to die.
A few of the deaths in the play do not affect the remaining characters, instead they merely add to the theme of the story, while others trigger many different reactions from the bereaved cast. Hamlet plays the most important role in the death of the other characters. It can be said that he essentially caused the downfall of the people around him.
