Critical Lens: Araby by James Joyce

James Joyce once “referred to Dublin as the center of paralysis”. In other words, Dublin is a place you can’t grow out of or be somebody. I agree with the quote because in the story refers to Dublin as a dark, cold place more like a haunted house and from what happens In the story it shows that sometimes that the area your in can paralyze you. In the story Araby by James Joyce, the narrator who is also the protagonist of the story, faces a struggle of romance and love yet is woken up to a cold dark reality, as seen through the authors treatment of the themes and religion and setting.

to do. Many things that happen in Dublin such as the boy being young having to ask for permission to go to the bazaar shows paralysis which shows that Dublin is a place of paralysis.
The Narrator continues facing problems with love and lives in his own fantasy vs. the reality as shown in the theme. The narrator thinks he found love and when he meets the girl and they talk about the bazaar, the bazaar symbolizes his love for her, it becomes his fantasy that he would go to the bazaar and buy her something but is faced with reality when he gets to the bazaar and sees that it closed down. The reality he faces turns to be dark and unfriendly to the point it paralyzes him. He wishes he was old so that he didn’t wait for his uncle to ask for permission, because it was his uncle that got him late. The relation between fantasy vs. reality of the theme in araby seems to paralyze the boy which shows that the author is correct in saying the Dublin is a place if paralysis.
