Drunk Talk: A Language for Intoxication is an article about how alcohol related problems vary, as alcohol consumers don't take into account the accepted or "normal" amounts appropriate for their bodies at various ceremonies and parties. This article was written by Hilda Loughran.
In Drunk Talk: A Language for Intoxication, Hilda Loughran explains how there has been an increased number of young drinkers, and that most of the problem drinkers were between the ages of 18 and 24 (DHHS, 1997). The survey sample ranged from people ages 17 to 50 years old, 80% being females. 555 words were collected as an alternative to the word "drunk", the top 3 being "wasted", "locked", and "langered" (Gusfield, 1996).
The article is concluded with some more interesting facts on alcohol and different cultures. It explains how when studied, it was discovered that in the Irish culture drinking and getting drunk is so common that it has changed their language and also is not as offensive as other culture's languages. Also, the Irish talk about the dangers of drinking as if it were a joke, and seem to ignore the dangerous effects of alcohol (Hansen 1993).
