The - Struggles in the Play
The , by Arthur Miller, is a story that contains many
struggles. These struggles come about as a result of the strict
Puritan society in which the story takes place. There are two main
struggles in the book. The first never actually takes place in the
story, but is described many times throughout the first act and is the
basis for the trials. It is Abigail's and all the other girls' need to
be free and act like teenagers. The second is the result of the
corruption of the trials. It is John Proctor's fight to convince the
townspeople that the accused women are not witches (especially his
wife), and that it is Abigail who should be killed instead.

In 1933 after he graduated high school he became interested in literature after reading dostoevsky's "The Brothers Karamaou". Then he was refused admission to the University of Michigan because he had too low of grades. Then he went and worked on his families new garment business. That's when he wrote his fist piece of work "In Memoriam" which was never published.

Then in1934 he was admitted into the University of Michigan after he wrote a persuasive letter to the dean. That is where he met his first wife Mary Grace Slattery who was also studying play writing.

Arther Miller has won many awards for his writing. For example he won the Avery Hope Award in 1936 for No Villain and in 1937 for Honors at Dawn. Then in 1938 he won the Theater Guild National Award for They Too Arise.
