This report will summaries the book "The Great War" written by Cyril Falls.
The book is mainly about the cause and the course of the most costly war
of casualties related to battles.
Book One -1914
Chapter I, Vultures in the skies:

This chapter deals about the cause of World War I. At a Sunday morning in
June 28 1914 the Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria visited the city of
Sarajevo. At this day the Archduke and his wife planed a parade through
Sarajevo. Everything started quite and the mop was cheering. But while
the parade was going on a terrorist who fought for the independence of
Serbia from Austria-Hungary threw a bomb at the car of the Archduke, but

that Germany has to knock out France first to avoid a two front war so
that the bigger strength of the Entente would be compensated.

The numbers at the beginning of the war were:

Russia 114 divisions

Germany 87 divisions

French 62 divisions

Austria 49 divisions

Britain 6 divisions (got bigger during the war, from her
colonies)

Chapter III The Clash in the West:

The Germans took the initiative during the beginning of the war. They
followed with all their patriotism the "Schlieffen Plan". It said the
Germany has to take down France in about six weeks so that a two fron war
could be avoided. To accomplish that Germany has to strike through
Belgium to avoid the big fortresses at the French border. The
disadvantage was that this meant that Britain will also com in the war,
but the Kaiser had spoken. For the Germans the advance was really good
and the Schlieffen Plan seemed to work, Germans could ...

the Russians. Also Germany had to send way more troops to the eastern
frontier, because of the great victories that Russia achieved.

During the reorganization of the eastern front another major battle was
fought in the West at the "Battle Of Ypres" at October 30th. That was one
of the last "open field" battles without heavy artillery support. And it
once again showed the big advantage of the defender against the attacker,
because of the machine gun. Casualties were about 100,000 on the German
side and 50,000 at the British and additional 50,000 on the French side.
