Alcohol is a depressant and it depresses the central nervous system. It is not clearly understood how alcohol effects the central nervous system, but it enhances the inhibitory effects of the neourotransmitter GABA at the receptor. About ninety percent of alcohol is metabolized in the liver by the enzyme, alcohol dehdrogenase which changes alcohol to acetaldehyde; which is then converted to acetic acid . The amount of alcohol that can be metabolized is constant; about 0.25- 0.30 ounces per hour.
