Henry James’s novella, “Daisy Miller” offers insight to the way gossip influences people’s perception of one another. Henry James’s novella takes place in two places; a hotel in Vevy, Switzerland, and in Italy, Rome in the late nineteenth century. The main character in this novella is a young, pretty, rich, unmarried American girl name Daisy Miller. Daisy is traveling around Europe with her mother and younger brother; Randolph. She is unable to understand the social customs of the places she visits. Daisy goes to a castle named Chillion with Winterbourne alone which causes scandal throughout the wider community. While she is at the castle she does not seem interested in the castle, but is more interested in getting to know more about Winterbourne and the details about his life. Which is quite odd to him.
