The entrance to the dark hole in the ground
filled me with rapid fear, I fainted,
but there was no other way.

The sound of rumbling carriages thrashed like
maddened beasts thought the dark night.
The city was alive with levels of despair.

The first were those seated on benches,
Waiting - hunched in groups and together
their faces bland, filled with an empty sadness.

My guide let me see the reality of minds
submerged in sad-eyed sorrow,
as the trains swept in and out of the underground.

A hollow tide of nausea swept over me
at the worlds of suffering that lay hidden

historically specific overtones and references in the Inferno. I was at first tempted to choose Virgil's less structured work, but decided that Dante's work offered more scope and detail for the pastiche. Dante makes explicit moral judgments relating to the historical and public figures of the time. I decided to leave this aspect out as it would have meant that I would not have been able to concentrate on the development of mood and atmosphere. Essentially the poem does not attempt in any sense to "copy" Dante; rather the Inferno is used as a creative source of inspiration for the poem.
