David Hume being the empiricist philosopher that he was believed that we receive our knowledge or “contents” of consciousness from perceptions that we have in our mind. It is through these perceptions, which are made up of thoughts or ideas and impressions, that we experience the world around us.
Since our perceptions are made up of thought and impressions, our impressions are the ones that impact us the most since, they are the ones that we receive through our senses and our feelings, thoughts or ideas or less forcible and lively. our feelings, pleasures, and sensations succeed each other and never all exist at the same time. Since all these impressions are never constant and invariable it cannot be any of these impressions, therefore we have no idea or impressions of the “self” these philosophers talk about.
He goes on and talks about how there are many different ways to explain the being of “self”, but for him whenever he think about it he always comes up with the idea of “self” succeeding perception, one fallowing the other. He says he cannot think of the idea of “self” without the idea of perception. He says whenever perception is removed from the equation then “self” no longer seizes to exist. Without Perception, “self” would not exist. For Hume this is the best explanation an empiricist can come up with, he acknowledges that there are other ways to explain, but they are most likely unreasonable and probably wrong.
