Death Of A Salesman: Oedipus Complex

The play, Death of a Salesman is mainly about a middle class family living in Brooklyn. Willy Loman, the father, is a man who is trying to do what he can for his family but is living a lie about his success. Linda Loman, the wife, covers up for Willy’s lies and failures. Happy, the youngest son, is the most gullible and is “happy” to follow his father’s unreliable lead. Biff is the son that comes to reality with himself and realizes his family’s failure. All of the confidence that was installed into Biff by Willy from young was good at first but then later played to Biff’s disadvantage. When Biff felt like he could no longer live up to his father’s expectations, he started stealing, and lying to his father for satisfaction. Biff noticed what he was doing when he was about to steal Bill Oliver’s pen. He questioned himself on why he was stealing the pen. He said to himself, “What the hell am I am I grabbing this for? Why am I trying to become what I don’t want to be?” Biff was unhappy with himself and wanted to change. He told his father that it was his fault. Biff never learned right from wrong which is why he stole so much. This reminds me of the play Meet The Browns when son Michael Jr. resorted to selling drugs to support his mother and sister.
