Within no time at all Arthur Miller became world renowned as his play received the Pulitzer Prize, the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award, and the Antoinette Perry Award among others. He worships the goddess of success, but he doesn't have the talent or the temperament to be a salesman, his chosen career. When he fails as a salesman, no other measure of success, the love of his family, his talent as a carpenter, can comfort him. He believes that a person who fails in business has no right to live. Willy feels empty; the fulfillment he feels he needs is non-existent.
