Death Of Ivan Ilyich

There are many interesting characters in this story, and the attitudes in which they are written correlate well within the context. Praskovya, the wife of Ivan, and mother of his children, has a narcissistic attitude towards life. She conducts herself with a spurious and self-interested behavior towards others, and pays little attention to the needs of her dying husband. You get the feeling that Praskovya's real attitude is one of antipathy and impatience as she waits for Ivan to pass away. This attitude is also adopted by Lisa, the daughter of Ivan. Vasya is able to connect with people, and understands his father's choices and plight on a deeper level. Aside from Gerasim, Vasya is one of the few characters that show his sympathy for the dying man. Despite his lack of presence in the story, Peter Ivanovich is yet another interesting character. Peter is Ivan's closest friend and colleague, but is a shallow and self-serving man. Peter doesn't exhibit the slightest care when his close friend Ivan dies. He is driven by materialistic means, and views other individuals as tools for his own selfish advancement. Peter Ivanovich is a man who prefers to avoid anything that might be displeasing, including the funeral of his dead friend Ivan that he reluctantly attends.
