The death penalty is a necessary evil in certain circumstances. Without the deterrent of capital punishment, violent crimes would increase and victims of such crimes would feel that the justice system has failed them. Where there has been heinous and ruthless crimes surrounding the killings of multiple innocent individuals, there needs to be capital punishment. One of the major problems I see with the death penalty is the varied laws aspect. The laws regarding the death penalty vary from state to state as do the methods used to carry out the death penalty. The crimes that the death penalty can be used for are also varied depending on many things. There needs to be more uniformity so those who commit crimes will be more aware of the consequences of their actions. Another problem coinciding with the varied laws is the infrequency of capital punishment. Defendants who are found guilty or similar crimes with similar circumstances often face completely different consequences for their actions. Deals are made with the most horrific criminals, many of which are sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, instead of being sentenced to death like another who committed a similar crime.
