Stealing and repaying debts were dominant images in Death of a Salesman. Biff's obsessive thievery led him only into despair and trouble. Debts, such as the mortgage and insurance payments, burdened Willy Loman all his life. These reappearing images enhanced the meaning of this play by acting as a unifying tool within it. With these troubles appearing frequently, they only caused the Lomans to learn from them and to understand them.

impatience led to stealing. After waiting for a long time to see Oliver for an interview, he took off down the stairs taking Oliver's expensive fountain pen with him. After admitting to himself that he robbed himself of every job he had, he tried to explain it to his father. As a result, Biff's stealing taught him a lesson and made him realize his true self.
Increasing debts placed much burden upon Willy Loman. Willy always had to pay for repairs, the mortgage, the insurance, and other bills. In the first flashback, he boasted that he made twelve hundred dollars on the last trip but later confessed that he only earned two hundred. After making multiple road trips and returning with little or no success, he could never face or admit that he was not a good salesman.
