Willy’s failure to achieve the American dream was due to many things. One was his character; his character did not permit him to take full advantage of his skills. Willy was made to be a creator not a salesman; “there’s more of him in that front stoop than his business”(p.138). Even at such an old age he still has not found himself. “Cant you stay a few days, your just what I need, ben, I have a fine position here, but I well, dad left when I was such a baby, and I still feel kind of temporarily about myself” (P. 51). Willy humanistic values were being kind to people, sympathy, and loyalty. These are not the best traits for a salesman. A salesman just needs to care about making profit. Even though Bernard was Biffs age we can see the difference between Willy’s values and Bernard’s. Bernard believed in working hard. He had always studied for his test, and he’s a realist, this permitted him into being a successful lawyer. “What’s the secret?” (p.92). Willy asked this because he did not understand how it was possible for Bernard, a kid who Willy viewed as a nerd, who had no friends to become so successful.
