One reason why Denzel Washington has always appealed to me was because he stars in movies that feature real people and true stories. One of his earlier films did just this. In the movie “Cry Freedom” he plays the role of Steve Biko, which was a black activist living in South Africa. The movie stars Donald Woods (Kevin Kline) as a white journalist who begins to follow Biko’s activities. Soon after they meet, Biko takes Woods to a black neighborhood to show him the conditions and restrictions that the government has set for the black community. Woods begins to see Biko’s point of view, which basically pushes for equal opportunity among the black community, just like that available to the white community. Biko is later arrested and killed by the government. This causes rebellion in certain areas of the country while Woods is determined to let the world know the truth about Biko. Woods is soon tangled up in the law for doing this and has to flee the country ...
