Paul's Case by Will Cather tells the story of a young man lost in a sea of despair. He feels that he has been born into a world that does not fit him, the world of Cordelia Street. Paul's life on Cordelia Street, as described by Cather is very ordinary. He expresses his disdain for this life on many occasions, and his lack of interest becomes evident to his instructors who find his attitude disconcerting. Cather presents the case of a youth lost to despair in this story. In a moment of haste, a life is lost because a young boy feels there is no escape from the banality of his existence. His plight is understood by no one, as he struggles to make sense of his misfortune on his own ...

times, when he lets his imagination whisk him away from his everyday existence into what Paul considers the world he should have been brought up into.

Paul describes Cordelia Street as a place where he feels "the waters close above his head" (Cather, 71). The music hall however, offers relief, it is hear that he finds "the greatest pleasure in his life....and lost himself" (Cather, 70). Paul imagines himself as one of the actors, living a wonderful existence, and even goes so far as to claim to others that he knows all of the actors and divas personally.

At a later date in time, Paul after a series of misfortunes finds himself working with another company from whom he steels enough money from to escape, after having gained their trust. For a brief time, Paul escapes his mundane existence to live the life he had always dreamed, the life he felt that he should have been born into. He rents a hotel room in New York and purchases fine clothes, and believes himself to be lucky ...
