Development of Mathematical Models for the Analysis of Hepatitis Delta Virus Viral Dynamics - College Paper

Development of Mathematical Models for the Analysis of Hepatitis Delta Virus Viral Dynamics

Hepatitis delta virus is considered to be a satellite virus of the hepatitis B virus, because HDV’s outer envelope has surface antigens that are encoded by the genome of HBV. HDV is a small circular RNA virus, which means that it has ribonucleic acid as its genetic material. HDV can either co-infect or super-infects liver cells. Co-infection occurs when an individual is simultaneously infected by HBV and HDV, while super-infection occurs in people who already suffer from chronic HBV infection. Both co-infection and super-infection result in more severe complications, such as liver cirrhosis (which is the loss of liver tissue by the formation of scar tissue), loss of liver function, and ...

will be infected with HDV 200 after being infected with HBV. However, this assumption is actually not very realistic, because the time interval between the onset of HBV infection and the subsequently HDV infection can vary greatly amongst different individuals. Some individuals may be more vulnerable to HDV infection than others. Nevertheless, the assumption is important for the mathematical model used in the context of the paper.
When the liver is only infected by HBV, the change in the number of uninfected cells at one time increases at a constant rate with which these normal cells are being produced. The number of uninfected cells decreases as they die off at a constant death rate. There is also a loss of uninfected cells as they become infected with the hepatitis B virus, which is related to the infection rate and viral load of ...
