Dig With it

History, identity, memory, tradition. Seamus Heaney incorporates all of these themes in his poem “Digging.” This poem commemorates the initial encounter with ‘‘world become word’” . Using realistic aspects of life and the world, Heaney is able to express his feelings through his poetry. He calls upon memories from his childhood of his father and grandfather to illustrate the traditional work of his family and explain why he is having a hard time justifying his identity as a writer. These memories are presented in an incredibly lifelike and imaginable manner primarily due to the use of descriptive language throughout the poem that appeals to all of the senses.

In fact, perhaps it's because he admires his father and his grandfather so much that he tries to be as hard working as they are, even though his work is very different. He grows up looking up to them, and his admiration shapes the person the speaker becomes in his adult life.
The speaker of "Digging"-the perfect illustration of a family affair , struggles with his identity in relationship to his family. His father and grandfather were farmers and they valued manual labor. The speaker, however, is a writer, and has chosen that line of work. So where exactly does he fit in? Well, for most of the poem, it seems like he doesn't.
