When only taking into consideration physical violence experienced by women the statistics are shocking, with 2 to 4 million women being assaulted by their partners per year in the United States. Per the American Medical Association one out of three women will be a victim of violence by a husband or boyfriend at some point in her life. Government statistics show that 1,500 to 2,000 women are murdered by partners and ex-partners per year, making up more than one-third of all female homicide victims.
What is more shocking to me is that only slightly half of intimate partner violence is even reported to law and that is only reporting the "physical" violence. Physical abuse is only the beginning of abuse that women may be subjected to. There are emotional and verbal abuse that women go through as well, that can cause deep and long-lasting wounds that aren't as obvious as a punch or a slap.
