Down On The River


As we headed down the shoot of one of the largest and most toilsome rapids in North America, we knew we were in trouble. Our guide barked orders from behind as if we had met our match. We could all hear a distinct change in his voice half way through the rapid, and a few of us sensed something wasn’t right. Just then, I saw it, a boulder that dwarfed our raft, and we were hopelessly on a collision course with it. Everyone in the raft was paddling with every bit of force they could muster, but the current was too overwhelming. The tail end of our raft whipped around forcefully, we braced for impact and WHAM! in the distance. Then and only then, did I realize the grip of death I so narrowly escaped. I was lucky, but I also realized something else, I realized that from here on out, it was nothing but adventure for me.
This was my first time rafting, in fact, I had barely even heard of white water rafting until my father had suggested it to me 2 hours before we went on the river. The whole concept seemed stupid to me, but I didn’t have any idea what it was. Every year, our family vacationed in Eastern Tennessee, and I always dreaded going, because of the lack of activities to do. This all changed the summer that I was 14 years old when introduced to the exciting river sport. The most exciting experience was yet to come; all the mayhem was upon us when we entered The Powerhouse, a series of rapids on the lower end of The Ocoee.
