It is impossible to deny the benefits and results obtained by Dr. Harvey Wiley and his crusade to make this nation aware of the need for the enactment and enforcement of a pure food and drug law. Living in the year 2000 , it is hard for most of us to imagine a time when a simple trip to the store to pick up cosmetics, a prescription, or some meat could have deadly results. But at the turn of the century , this was a reality. It is due to Dr. Wiley's scientific vision, wisdom, and courage to overcome indifference of the public that the Pure Food and Drugs Act was passed in 1906, enforced, and became a major step forward in making the food industry what it is today.

Honest manufacturers were put at a competitive disadvantage and were forced to adopt the practices that could enable them to meet the prices of the less ethical competition. These practices were evident in the debasement of food, and in "patent" medicine.
