What is Drug Abuse?
Drug abuse is a maladaptive pattern of substance use leading to clinically significant impairment or distress. The difference between using drugs and abusing drugs depends on three things, what the drug is for, how much of the drug is used, and the effect that the drug has on the person. Drug abuse typically relates to one using drugs in an excessive manner, whether the drug is legal or illegal. For example, marijuana is illegal in some states, but in other states, it is not. Alcohol is a depressant, for example, some psychiatrics and medical doctors recommend anyone who is taking a prescription drug, not to mix their medication with alcohol. The side effects that the alcohol can have on the prescription drug, such as an anti-depressant, can take away the effect of the anti-depressant drug. If you were to mix alcohol and the anti-depressant drug, you are in essence defeating the purpose of taking the anti-depressant, considering that alcohol is a depressant in itself.
