The brochure for the U.S. Army, Count Your Benefits in the Army
Reserve, lists attractive advantages for those considering a career in the
military field: reserve pay, money for college, vocational training,
income tax breaks, and retirement benefits, among countless others. None
of the benefits mentioned, however, are meant to outweigh what the Army
reserve simply defines as the "intangible" perks of enlisting: feeling as
if one belongs, fulfilling one's patriotic duty by serving his or her
country, and gaining a sense of leadership. Dulce et Decorum est.... by
Wilfred Owen (1893-1918 ) gives greatly contrasting images of army life,

way he saw his fellow soldiers in combat while describing his chimera, for
they were "knock-kneed, coughing like hags"and "bent double, like old
beggars under sacks". These words don't necessarily bring to mind a
healthy 17-year old boy, does it? The other words he used- "drunk" "lame"
and "blind,"- all showed soldiers' impaired state, and held both
denotative meanings and connotative meanings in their vagueness, especially
the word "blind," which, in my opinion, was ambigious because not only
were they "blind" in the sense that they couldn't see because of the gas,
night and fog, but also "blind" in the sense of not having the foresight
or understanding of what was next. The descriptions of these young men not
only showed the psychological effect, but the physical aging that war has
on a human being.

While one could easily develop the basic "War is hell!" theme from
this poem, Dulce et decorum Est" does more than any anti-war poem before
it ...
