Egghead: Devan Mitchell

Strong people stand up for themselves. The strongest people stand up for others. Devan Mitchell is a 9th grade student at St. Patrickā€™s High School who is constantly changing his position on the circle of bullying. His loyalty to his friends is put to the test when they victimize another student grade 9 student named Will Reid. His behaviours are fueled by peer pressure from his best friend and the biggest school bully, Shane Duran, but are limited by his knowingness for what is right. Despite some of the past bad choices Devan has made, he is a defender on the circle of bullying because he protects his peers, he is kind hearted, and he is considerate.

he complimented Katie's artwork after accidentally knocking her over. Being kind hearted instead of mean-spirited is a key thing every defender on the circle of bullying should have, and Devan displays this part of his personality numerous times, including in this example.

Devan also continuously expresses considerate actions. He demonstrates this when he apologized to Will about his past actions on page 151, when he was a henchman to Shane. He used to do devilish things like lock Will out of the boys changeroom when he is nearly naked with Shane, and he apologized for this. Devan showing sympathy for Will indicates he regrets his past actions and intends to turn his act around.

Devan may not have always had these characteristics, but he gradually grows into them through maturity and sympathy for Will throughout the book.
