It all started in 1755 in England when Joseph Black made a phenomenal discovery. His discovery inspirers Sir Humphrey Davy in 1808 to first isolate an element labeled magnesium as an impure metal. Humphrey an English chemist pioneered the study of Electrochemistry and has successfully isolated the elements sodium, potassium, calcium, strontium and barium as well as magnesium. He was assisted by Antoine Alexandre Brutus Bussy; A.A.B Bussy as he was known was a French chemist who primary studied pharmaceuticals also took part in the discovery of magnesium, but the first documented isolation of the element was credited to Sir Humphrey Davy.

Also another very popular ancient use for this element was as an old type flash power and in flash bulbs used for photography, also when you burnt magnesite is was used as brick and liners in furnaces. Magnesium alloys were used as early as 1910 in Germany in the World War. They are now also used in jet-engine parts, rockets and missiles, luggage frames, portable power tools, pyrotechnics, incendiary bombs and optical instruments. Another important modern use of magnesium today is in preventing the corrosion of iron and steel, as in pipeline and ship bottoms (very often exposed to water.) The rapid oxidation of magnesium prevents the slower oxidation and the corrosion of the iron!
