-Left school as teen to live reclusive life on family homestead where she wrote notebooks of poetry.

-Work was published after death may 15, 1886. Now considered 1 of towering figues of American lit

-Her paternal grandfather, Samuel Dickinson- founder of Amherst College.

-Her father worked at Amherst and served as a state legislator.

-Father married Emily Norcross in 1828 -three children: William Austin, Lavinia Norcross and Emily.

-Emily Dickinson was educated at Amherst Academy (now Amherst College) and the Mount Holyoke Female Seminary.
