Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman

The two poems being analyzed are “A Book” by Emily Dickinson and “When I Heard The Learn’d Astronomer” by Walt Whitman. Emily Dickinson was born on December 10th, 1830 in Amherst, Massachusetts. When growing up, Emily was a very bright child that had multiple poetic skills. She was able to create many rhyming stories of her own. At the time, Calvinism was at its strongest and her father was the one to enforce its ideals. Though he was strict, Emily loved him and followed most of the religion. She did encounter a problem with its belief system, which made her feel secluded from the religious group. This lead to her writing poetry to express her feeling of seclusion. Then the civil war began and Walt went to Virginia to visit his injured brother. While he was there he volunteered at an army hospital and witnessed the war first hand. This gave his poetry a theme of death, immortality, and the soul. When the war was over, Walt published the seventh edition of “Leaves of Grass”. Walt Whitman died at the age of 73 with now a worldwide reputation.
