Emily Dickinson's Because I Could Not Stop for Death

She's Dying...Or is She?

In the poem "Because I could not stop for Death," Emily Dickinson misleads the readers with a speaker who is actually speaking from "beyond the grave". Throughout the first stanzas of the poem the speaker is depicted as someone who is in the last stage of her life and she is experiencing death. It can easily be interpreted that the poem is a personal view of the process the reader underwent while dying and her acceptance of Death in the beginning. However, by the close of the poem it is revealed to the audience that the speaker has been dead for centuries and she is merely "reminiscing" about her journey to the with Death. in the mortal realm and had no choice to choose whether she was ready to die or not so Death, in the kindest manner, stopped for her. Also in this stanza the author illustrates for us the beginning of the end for the speaker by placing the speaker in a carriage with death and immortality.

Because I could not stop for Death -
He kindly stopped for me -
The Carriage held but just Ourselves -
And Immortality -

The visual of an actual carriage ride the speaker describes to us shows us that the speaker is very accepting Death although she is engaged with life. The speaker faces her own mortality when Death stops her but by immortality also being included in the carriage ride Death is making the fear of dying less intense and more peaceful by diminishing the fear and concerns about death and insuring that there is an afterlife. Furthermore proven by the next stanza.

And I had put away
My labor and my leisure too,
