Briefly describe the contents of the Enuma Elish and the creation story in Genesis 1:1-2:4a. How accurate is it to say that the Genesis account is an Israelite or Jewish version of the Enuma Elish?
After analysing the Enuma Elish and the creation story in Genesis 1:1-2:4a, it is evident that there are some definite links and parallels between the two myths. The Genesis 1 story begins with God creating the ‘heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters’ (Genesis 1:1-3). From here on in, God creates by word alone, proclaiming what he wants to generate and following it by asserting it as ‘good’. Everything which is created by God is created in order and created on the earth, which is present but has nothing in it, for example; the order is light, vault (sky), land and sea, vegetation plants and trees, sun moon and stars, water creatures and birds, lands animals and finally mankind. God’s final creation is the pinnacle of the story, where humans are created in the image of God and are God’s representatives on earth.
