In the world of psychology one of the most popular and revered child development theories belongs to Erik Erickson. His eight stages of development have been at the center of debate, discussion, and acceptance. According to Erickson, the socialization process of eight stages, of what he coined the “eight stages of man”. These eight stages were formulated, not through experimental work, but through extensive experience in psychotherapy. I was in an abusive situation in which I was not being given proper nourishment and was subjected to physical abuse with frequent cigarette burns. Needless to say, the basic foundation started out pretty shaky and as I progressed it was almost like building a house of cards in many ways.
In Erickson’s second stage, Learning Autonomy vs. Shame (18 months to about 3), the well parented child emerges sure of itself and elated with new found self control. By the time I was old enough for this stage my father had sole custody of me yet I remained shy and timid with many insecurities. I was almost four before I completely potty trained.
