Essay Writing Structure and Planning

Planning-

Break down the topic by identifying the key words and finding synonyms for them. It is important that you understand what the topic is asking of you.

Rework the topic. Using your deeper understanding of the essay question, develop an individual interpretation of the topic

Develop a contention. What is your point of view on the topic? Remember that you must remain `objective' in your analysis, so choose a point of view that can be supported by text evidence.

Brainstorm some key points, claims or arguments about the text that could support your contention (avoid text examples at this stage)

Do Not- list examples in your introduction

Do Not- refer directly to the topic or the essay e.g. "The topic is true because..." or "This essay will show..."

Body Paragraphs-

T- Topic sentence. Your topic sentence must include a main point, claim or argument that responds to the essay topic and supports your essay contention. Topic sentences should not contain text examples and should be quite short (under 20 words).

E- Elaborate. Usually your topic sentence will need further explanation.

E- Example/Evidence. Use examples and direct quotes to support the paragraph point you have made in your topic sentence

E- Explain how the examples and quotes support your topic sentence and the essay contention

L- Link. Use a linking sentence to conclude your paragraph point by showing its significance in addressing the essay topic and ...
