Films like Better Luck Tomorrow and television shows like The Sopranos treat ethnic issues with a harsh and realistic eye. One of the main reasons such productions as these are both critically acclaimed and popular with viewers is because the themes, characters, and issues they raise hit home. The stereotypes they purposely portray might anger some viewers, but these portrayals are still snapshots of certain segments of human nature and culture. Stereotypes often do prevent positive perceptions of minority communities and enforce ingrained prejudices, but these beliefs are based in realism. Bringing negative stereotypes into the light of comedy, for example, allows viewers to release the underlying tensions associated with prejudice and racism. Elucidating stereotypes in a shocking manner can also force viewers to reconsider their beliefs and question their validity. This is true for whatever racial or ethnic group is being portrayed.
Moreover, painting a positive view of an ethnic community would also entail creating or perpetuating stereotypes, albeit positive ones. While it is important for film and television producers to balance negative stereotypes with positive images of their own ethnic communities, it is still more important to be true to the craft and not pander to people who only want to see the world through rose-colored glasses.
