strong evidence that spot number in guppies has evolved as a trade-off of survival traits.
Industrial melanism in the Peppered Moth is another example of Darwin's theory of evolution. Until the mid-1890's, all peppered moths were pale and spotted, which gave them a camouflage from predators against the pale lichen covered tree bark they slept on during the day. But around the age of industrialization, a black pepper moth was discovered in urban areas, and by 1900 nearly all of the urban area moths were black whereas pale moths were still in rural areas. This color change is thought to be caused by the factory smoke killing the lichen off the trees, leaving the pale moths defenseless against predators and having to adapt (or evolve) to survive.
