European Colonization of Nigeria

In the late 1800s the Europeans colonized Nigeria, they brought new Western customs, traditions, and new religions. European colonization unified the many tribes of Nigeria into one nation, and started teaching them to govern themselves independently. The Europeans laid down the first foundation of education, Christianity, and spread many new western customs. European colonization impacted Nigeria in a positive manner, by building schools, introducing new religions, and introducing western culture without abolishing the Nigerians sacred cultural traditions.

European missionaries established the first schools in Nigeria in 1925, laying down the first foundation of education. "Nigerians, living in British colonies, were estimated to have obtained at least two years of formal education from 1939-1945" (Harmon, Daniel E). The Nigerians had untapped potential. "They were eager learners; they were solving problems on their own and figuring things out by themselves with just a minor education"(Harmon, Daniel E.). It was clear to the Europeans that the Nigerians were very capable of governing themselves after observing them, and it was soon clear to the Nigerians too. Students started questioning and arguing British rule.
