INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this paper is to introduce, discuss, and analyze the play "Tartuffe," by Moliere. Specifically, it will discuss an important theme of the play, including text citations and quotes. Moliere's themes are woven throughout this play, in effect, they are the warp and weft that hold it together and make it blend into a cohesive whole. Tartuffe the beggar is greedy and evil, while Orgon and his family are good and decent, but Orgon is easily duped, and ready to see the good in another, while ignoring the bad.

"Our prince is not a friend to double dealing, / His eyes can read men's inmost hearts, and all / The art of hypocrites cannot deceive him" (Moliere). Orgon and his family are saved, but most of all, Orgon finally sees what a despicable character Tartuffe really was, and how this con man came between Orgon and the family who loves him.
Moliere's themes run throughout the play, showing Tartuffe's greed, and even his use of the truth to make it sound like a lie. "Yes, brother, I am wicked, I am guilty,/ A miserable sinner, steeped in evil,/ The greatest criminal that ever lived. Each moment of my life is stained with failures;" (Moliere). There is another element woven throughout the play, and that is surprise. Even the ending is a surprise somewhat pulled out of a hat - the King saves the family at the very last moment.
