Body shape and underwear has had a significant part in women’s fashion. People may not think underwear could have such an impact, but it did. Women have gone from corsets to thongs in less than 100 years.
During the years 1890 to 1899, underwear was not spoken of much. Women were trying to get the hourglass figure, and an “S” siliouet. These body shapes were made possible by corsets. Corsets were said to “emphasize the fragility of women and to accentuate [their] physique” (Mulvey and Richards, 22). As years went on underwear changed. Between the years 1990-1910, underwear had a face-lift. Cotton underwear was now a thing of the past, and silk and other products took over. Now the corsets and slips weren’t only used for looks on the outside, but also were made to look good underneath. Lingerie was becoming more and more popular. New look was still to have the bust pushed up, but to show no cleavage. This look was called the Edwardian bust, and was a look that was lost by the turn of the century.
Time passed and corsets began to fade. Loose bras came into popularity. These new comfortable bras came in somewhere around 1912. Caresse Crosby is said to have invented the first bra.
