The Exuberance of Life in Rainbow Lorikeets by Mark O'Connor

In Rainbow Lorikeets Mark O’Connor communicates the exuberance of life in the natural world through his perception of the Rainbow Lorikeets. He does this by using a range of language techniques to convey the behavioural lifestyle of the lorikeets, and also delves into use of imagery to help capture the true beauty and essence of the natural surroundings. Mark shows great empathy towards them, as he clearly communicates his feelings and impressions of the lorikeets. Some of the techniques Mark used to achieve this are metaphors, alliteration, simile and imagery.

as a lorikeet is focused on its food. In the second metaphor, the strength of the beak is emphasised, as it is linked to a scimitar. This technique conjures a strong image of the ferocity of their beak, and exaggerates the power that the lorikeets posses.
In the sixth stanza, metaphors are used to describe the surroundings in the lorikeet’s perspective. Their world is conveyed as “millions of honey-dripping pores” The metaphor describes their world as a vast expansion of never ending supply. This suggests to the reader that the lorikeets are surrounded by a beautiful abundance and a fruitful environment in which they are liberated to explore and consume. The strong imagery that is used helps emphasise the metaphor, and creates a positive tone to the poem. These metaphors show the exuberance of the natural life, as the lorikeets and their surroundings are portrayed in positive light, and as they show the innate beauty of the lorikeets.
