Fahrenheit 451: The Books And Symbol Of The Phoenix



Have you ever watched for a long moment at how birds fly so
graceful and freely in the sky? They float with such elegance in the sky,
flapping each wing with delicacy. Montag must have felt this about the
books in the story , Farenheit 451. Books were forbidden in Montag’s world
because they were thought to bring chaos among the people of his society,
but in actual reality, it would have brought freedom of oneself to think.
Throughout the story, books are constantly compared to as books and
connected to the symbol of the phoenix.

The world of Fahrenheit 451 is deprived of books, one of the

a snowy feather….The men above were hurling
shovelsfull of magazines into the dusty air. They fell like slaughtered
birds.” (page 37) In Montag’s view, the burning books were seen as dying,
hopeless birds. Somehow, Montag saw the books as a sign of happiness and
freedom. He realizes the light in books, and he even pities them for being
burnt without mercy. Flaming pages of books seemed to be ike flapping
wings reaching out for a hand to Montag. “The books leapt and danced like
roasted birds, their wings ablaze with red and yellow feathers.” (page
117) Instead of seeing harmful books burning to crisp, Montag actually saw
life and freedom taken away from the world.

“Books bombarded Montag’s shoulders, his arms, his upturned face. A
book landed, almost obediently, like a white pigeon, in his hands, wings
fluttering.”(opening page). In this example, Montag holds something far
more valuable than just a book. He holds a delicate “white pigeon” that
has life in it.
