In my essay I will refer to Patients, Patience Strong, Sisyphus, Canal:1977, BC;AD, The Contributor’s and The Sheepdog.
Patients is a very disturbing poem in that it challenges the way we usually see the hospital staff. We would prefer to view the hospital staff as professional, reliable, stable and infallible people. Here they are shown as lazy ( the nurses ) lecherous (the psychiatrist ) neurotic ( the director ) and eccentric ( the matron.) The poet writes as though she is part of the problem, “ But what can be done for us “ so it is more believable as she is writing from direct experience of the illnesses and bizarre behaviour that occurs among the staff of the hospital. . that the rest of us have. But we prefer to see people who are in charge of our health, our recovery or our lives even, as better and stronger than that. The title “Patients” has two sets of values. It is referring to the general patients of the hospital and also it is saying that everyone in the hospital is in fact a patient, including the staff.
The poem BC:AD is like its title, a short, snappy poem. It presents an unconventional way of looking at the birth of Christ. It challenges us to see this supposedly momentous occasion, the birth of Christ and a new religion, in a completely different light to the way we usually view Christmas. The poem gives us an image of life being dull and boring “Only dull peace Sprawled boringly over the earth.” And the Romans “Could find nothing better to do than counting heads in remote provinces.” This is when everyone was called for the census. The contributors is another Christmas poem. The nativity is referred to along with some of the ways in which we celebrate Christmas in the present time. The poem makes parallels with what happened then, and what happens now, and suggests that the one is not responsible for the other. Each stanza begins with not your fault. The first stanza claims it is not the fault of the three wise men who each took an expensive and inappropriate gift.

“Not your fault, gentlemen”
The next line,
“We acquit you of the calculatedly
Equivalent gift, the tinsel token.”

Is suggesting we all buy gifts of the same value just for show.
