Living conditions of the farmers were poor and cruel during the Great Depression. Between the years of 1930 and 1935 200,000 farms had foreclosed forcing people to move out of their homes. Over 300,000 people moved to California and 460,000 people moved to the Pacific north-west (Reinhardt). Many farmers turned and lived in ditch camps. These ditch camps were located on the sides of the roads where water ditches ran through. These camps were filthy and disease infested. Many children died of diarrhea and enteritis. People didn’t have enough money to get out of poverty. The average income for a white farm labor family was 1,300 per year. (“Farmers”). People who lived in the Great Depression said, “No one had any money. We were all in the same boat.” Many people made the best out of their living conditions, they found ways to have fun such as playing board ...
