The Fate of the Human Spirit in an Age of Disbelief: Importance of Religion

In his books The Fate of the Human Spirit in an Age of Disbelief, Huston Smith reflects on the continuing importance of religion. Smith organizes his reflections against three distinct human ages -- the traditional, modern and the postmodern. Smith rails that many people in the postmodern age are neglecting religion, with disastrous consequences.
Smith borrows heavily from Plato's allegory of the cave when he discusses how the postmodern age views religion. For Smith, this is tantamount to ruling in favor of atheism.
All these factors, state Smith, keep people inside the cave of scientism. By extension, Smith argues that people are trapped in a constructed reality that denies the existence of God or any aspects of spirituality. By emphasizing scientific knowledge and the actions of human beings, Smith believes that modern and post modern societies have neglected the role of the Divine Creator. Darwinian evolution theory, contends Smith, is totally inadequate in addressing questions of consciousness and the mind-body problem.
Smith believes that religion and spirituality have much to contribute towards freeing people from the tunnel of scientism. The author's call for religion thus begins with a call to biologists, scientists and people in general to acknowledge the limitations of science. Despite the advances over the past centuries, Smith points out that even the best scientists cannot explain the "Big Picture."
