Fate In Oedipus The King


“Oedipus the King” is a story about fate, and a story about character. Oedipus has a predetermined fate that he tries to escape; however, it is the eccentricities of his character that bring about changes in Oedipus’ situation. It may have been that his life was predetermined by a prophecy but it was his own oblivious, hot headed stubbornness that lead him closer to fulfilling the fate that he wanted to desperately to avoid. His character willed him towards his destiny. The story is about Oedipus’ fate and the fulfillment of his destiny. He is told that the will marry his mother and kill his father. “doomed to sleep with [his] my mother, doomed to murder [his] my father (1080).” For most of his life he was forewarned of this horrible fate. One could argue that it was this inescapable fate that led him to marry the Queen of Thebes and kill the King, unknowingly fulfilling his prophecy. Also, fate could have brought Oedipus to Thebes. Once he was notified of his prophecy he left Corinth to escape fate; however he ran towards it by ending up in Thebes. It was very unlikely that on his travels he would meet and kill his own father, and coincidentally solve the riddle that brought him to the throne in Thebes, and into his mother’s bed. Perhaps some sort of divine intervention induced these events to happen, because the chance of everything working out so perfectly was not likely. “Laios was murdered as the oracle foretold (1075).” It was fate that led Oedipus to the correct location.
