Each one of the characters in the stories "A Good Man is Hard to Find", "Baba and Me", and "A Peaceful Woman Explains Why She Carries a Gun" all have fears that they have to deal with. Grandma is afraid a killer will appear on her vacation with her family, a son is scared he is a disappointment to his father, and a woman living in the country is afraid she is vulnerable because she travels alone. The characters in these stories facing these problems are Grandma, Amir, and "a peace- loving woman".

down the hill in the car. Everyone gets out with minor injuries and there is a car slowly approaching them. The family asks for assistance with the car as three men get out of the car with guns. Grandma immediately noticed one of the men is the misfit. Grandma tells him he is a good person while his friends slowly kill her whole family. He explains he is not despite the way he was raised and kills the old woman.
Amir is the main character in "Baba and Me" and is a little boy who looks up to his father but fears because he is not like him, he is a disappointment him. His mother died when he was a baby. She was a teacher at a university and loved reading and wrote many books. Amir's father is athletic, strong and a humanitarian. He is a great man. He built and orphanage for children with nowhere else to go. But Amir is the complete opposite, he likes to read poems and books he doesn't stand up for himself, and isn't very sporty at all.
