Each one of the characters in the stories "A Good Man is Hard to Find", "Baba and Me", and "A Peaceful Woman Explains Why She Carries a Gun" all have fears that they have to deal with. Grandma is afraid a killer will appear on her vacation with her family, a son is scared he is a disappointment to his father, and a woman living in the country is afraid she is vulnerable because she travels alone. The characters in these stories facing these problems are Grandma, Amir, and "a peace- loving woman".

Grandma immediately noticed one of the men is the misfit. Grandma tells him he is a good person while his friends slowly kill her whole family. Amir is the main character in "Baba and Me" and is a little boy who looks up to his father but fears because he is not like him, he is a disappointment him. His mother died when he was a baby.
