Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper" used herself and her personal feelings, one such as depression, to write a fictional narrative that seems to bring out tension in the characters. husband, a physician, orders his wife to avoid any type of exhausting activity that could affect her disorder. He told her the cure for her condition is to "get perfect rest and all the air [she] could get" (Gilman 479). She describes the bedroom walls as, "One of those sprawling flamboyant patterns committing every artistic sin" (Gilman 480). With the narrator being stuck in the home, mostly confined in her bedroom, her depression just gets worse. In showing feminist criticism, Gilman uses a critique showing patriarchal ideology, which makes the narrator portray herself as a "patriarchal woman". Patriarchal means "controlled by men" and also men being superior to women(Napikoski).
There are several examples to show that the narrator in "The Yellow Wallpaper" is a patriarchal woman. She acts as if she knows what is best for her and thinks she knows what is wrong with her.
