Many feminists spend a great deal of time arguing that fairy tales influence women's lives. They argue that the fairy tales have a negative influence. If fairy tales, like Cinderella, only portray negative influences, should they be banned from children's reading list? They should if they have the same affects on men as well.
In the fairy tale Cinderella all the men in the story are princes. By being princes it implies that they are rich. When one reads the fairy tale and sees that every male is wealthy he strives to become this person. Striving to become this person could either have negative or positive influences on that person. than one thinks. It can put a person into a deep depression. The fairy tales could also have a positive affect on a person. If the person reading the fairy tale is one who takes constructive criticism well, than the fairy tales could have a positive influence on that person. That person would see that all the male characters are wealthy, and it would push him to strive to be as well off as the person in the story. Fairy tales also portray males as tricksters.
In the fairy tale Jack and the Beanstalk, the main character, Jack is a thief. In the story he walks through the forest, to get to the market, but instead of going there he buys beans from some stranger. The beans grow into a huge beanstalk that Jack climbs. When Jack gets to the top he notices a huge castle in front of him. He decides to go in. When he gets in he sees a singing harp and a goose that lays golden eggs.
