Fiction Analysis of A&P

A&P is short story written by John Updike in 1961. This story is narrated as a first person point of view. Sammy, is a typical 19-year-old working as a cashier at a supermarket called A & P. One day, three girl’s in bathing suits stop in to buy some snacks. When he sees the displeasured reactions the other store patron has towards the girls; he mindset begins to change. But the way the girls were dressed was not normal for the fellow patrons and employees of the establishment. He goes into describing the girls in detail. The first on that caught his attention was a chubby looking girl in a bright green two-piece bathing suit. The second is a tall with black frizzy hair. He states “the kind of girl other girls think is very “striking” and “attractive” but never quite makes it” (201). The third he notes as the queen by the way that she walked.
