The First Amendment guaranties us the “”. The

allows us to express our opinions and interact with other people. Does
this mean that we can say whatever we want? Whenever we want to? The

One may argue that speech is a divined gift from God and therefore,

society, is often initiated by “fighting words” - words that are so
insulting which would cause immediate violence.

The Bible says, “Do not accuse a man for no reason-when he has done
you no harm” for “God hates slanderers.” False statements that are made
to accuse another person cannot be tolerated. A recent study suggests
that a slandered person may suffer from injury of reputation, loss of
properties, mental disorder, and, in some cases, death.

The misuse of language can cause tremendous harm to the society.
In order to preserve peace to the nation, the Supreme Court has made
several decisions that serve as restrictions to the amendment. Speeches
that endanger public safety or the country and speeches that are involved
in the defamation of a person’s reputation are not protected by the First
Amendment.
