Friar Laurence's Speech In Romeo and Juliet

In the beginning of Act 2 Scene 3 in “Romeo and Juliet”, it starts off the morning after Romeo has his first encounter with Juliet which leads to the decision for the two of them to wed. Friar Laurence, the local priest, is out in tending to his garde. Romeo comes to find him to ask that he marry Juliet and himself and that is when Friar's soliloquy begins. The significance of his speech is to express the point that there is always the potential for something bad to be turned into something good, and vice versa, good things are able to be misused and turned into a bad thing. These are both complete opposites but they both have a way of working together. Another example of the opposing elements would be the line that says, “With baleful weeds and precious-juiced flowers…” The definition of baleful means evil, or deadly, and in reality is something that is not good for you. On the other hand, “precious-juiced flowers” would be healing and would make you feel good. The whole idea of the opposites all throughout the speech are to provide the reader with the thought that everyone has the ability to have good and bad within in them.
