In "From a Description of New England," John Smith talks about just how stunning the outdoors in the new world is. He seemed to describe nature this way to convince many people to come to the new world so that they all would be able to gain from the overflow of nature that he saw while on his voyage. hid. This city on a hill is to be put in a place where all can see. He reminded them to let their light shine before all men so that they may see the good works and to then glorify God in heaven. The eyes of the world were upon them and if they succeeded, they would have a bright testimony. He believed that if they succeeded, God would make it like that of New England. Winthrop's plans for his ideal community do indicate that he has accepted certain promises like John Smith's new land.

This "City on a Hill" that Winthrop talked of was not the holy city that the Puritans were seeking. It was not what John had imagined coming down from heaven and showing its ultimate glory. But the American dream was apart of this perfect city. They wanted this city to be nothing less than a reflection of God.
